People lined-up on a bus, holding onto hangers, look like washing hung on a clothesline. People on a subway moving-walk appear like industrial products on a conveyer belt. Men in public urinals remind me of the faucets in a long row. Elevators in a huge building spews people like a vending machine. When taking a seat in a lecture room, a roast chicken machine overlaps it. When looking up a huge building, people look like goods piled up in a structure.
The world makes people things again and again. A wide variety of principles and systems (for instance, capitalism and liberalism) consisting of modern times design the space we experienced as their own look.
Space is mechanically separated and our daily experience is economically organized and broken to pieces. Machine design and movement replace goods with people, transforming humanity into a physical property. Modernity oppresses us, disregarding each one¡¯s minute, individual characteristics.
Employing photographic metaphors, I intend to express this modernity in a cynical manner. I present another work with the same theme of last year Modern Times exhibition. All are digitally synthesized photographs and images to explain concepts. I select synthesized images rather than straight photographs to generate images I want to create. The title of this exhibition is Modern Times 2.
